The Little Dog Bed

Today, I'd like to share the pattern for this little dog bed I designed. When I was crocheting my little Sophie the Spaniel, I happened to have her sitting on a circular crochet coaster I'd made.  She looked so cute as if she was sitting on a little round rug. Then I had an idea to create a little bed for her to sit in. All I did was add a wall to the crochet coaster and voila! It turned into a cozy little doggy bed. I had originally made this bed just as a prop for my photos but ever since I posted the photo of Sophie and this little bed on instagram, I've had quite a few requests for the bed pattern so here it is! For anyone who has made one of my puppy designs and for anyone thinking of making one in the future, here is a little something extra you can make to give your little cuties a comfy home.

Materials

I used 4 ply (or sport weight for US) cotton/acrylic blend yarn in red and cream with a 2.25mm hook to make this bed. Using a lighter/heavier weight yarn will allow you to make the bed smaller or bigger as well. Alternatively, you can always skip or add a round to the base to make the bed smaller or bigger.

Skills required

  • Crocheting in spiral
  • Working in single crochet
  • Working in half double crochet
  • Working in double crochet
  • Working in puff stitch
  • Chains
  • Slip stitch
  • Increasing and decreasing
  • Basic sewing skills

Abbreviations: US terminology

st(s) = stitch(es)
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
inc = increase (2 sc in one stitch)
dec = decrease (2 sc together)
sl st = slip stitch
(…) = repeat the instructions in the brackets the given number of times
[…] = total number of stitches

Pattern

*The bed is crocheted continuously in spiral (unless specified otherwise), marking the beginning of each round with a stitch marker (optional but will be easier to follow for beginners)

Inner base:
*With the cream coloured yarn and 2.25mm hook
Round 1: ch 2,13 dc in magic ring (first ch2 counts as 1 dc), sl st into first ch 2. Ch 2. [14]
Round 2: (inc) repeat 14 times, sl st into first ch 2. Ch 2.  [28]
Round 3: (dc, inc) repeat 14 times, sl st into first ch 2. [42]
Round 4: (inc, dc in next 2 sts) repeat 14 times, sl st into first ch 2. [56]
Round 5: (dc in next 3 sts, inc) repeat 14 times, sl st into first ch 2. [70]
Leave a short tail and fasten off.

Bed:

You will be crocheting the inner base and the base of the bed together in round 6.
*With the red yarn and 2.25mm hook
Round 6: Hold the two pieces together with the wrong side facing each other, working only the back loops, sl st the pieces together. [70] *do not fasten off as you’ll be continuing on to round 7.

Before moving on to round 7, the wall of this bed uses a 3-double-crochet puff stitch. Here is how you work this stitch. (The very first puff stitch on round 7 & 9 calls for a 2-double-crochet puff stitch but the idea is the same as the 3-double-crochet puff stitch)

How to make a puff stitch:

Step 1. Yarn over (yo), insert the hook in the stitch, yarn over, draw the yarn through the stitch, yarn over, and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook.

Step2. Repeat above step 2 more times. You will have 3 half-way completed dc on your hook.

Step 3: Yarn over and draw the yarn through all 4 loops on the hook.

This completes a 3-double-crochet puff stitch!

Round 7: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). 2 dc puff st in same st as ch 3, (dc in next st, puff st in next st) repeat 26 times, hdc in next st, sc in next 14 sts, hdc in next st, sl st into the first ch 3. [70]
Round 8: Ch 1. Sc in next 54 sts. Ch 3, turn. [54] *you will have 16 sts unworked.
Round 9: 2 dc puff st in same st as ch 3 (counts as first dc), (dc in next st, puff st in next st) repeat 26 times.
Ch 1, turn. [54]

Round 10: Ch 1. Sl st in next 54 sts, ch 3, sl st into the dc of round 6 (as shown in photo below), sl st in next 16 sts, ch 3,
sl st into the top of first ch 1 [70]
Leave a short tail and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Voila! You're all done!

Sophie is all excited to break in her new bed!
